April 4, 2006 we are almost ready to move to Roatan

Well the long awaited day has nearly come. After spending the last 10 + years in retail (Divers Direct for me and Nike for my wife) we are getting ready to execute our dream and move to the islands. Roatan one the Honduran Bay Islands to be exact. To learn more about roatan check out www.roatannet.com

We have sold our house, packed our stuff and have spent the last few weeks taking care of last minute things (Doctors, immigration papers, finances etc..) Now the time is near.

We bought our tickets to fly south for April 12th so the real fun stories will begin as we move south of the old USA and take up island time as a way of life. The only big worry at this point is our dog Jazz. She has never flown and we are a little nervous about that but figure things will be fine.

We are going to miss our friends and I am sure some of the conveniences of American life but mostly we are excited about the change and looking forward to the challenges of starting our own property mgt and vacation house rental business.

Stay tuned more to come...

Steve,

Thanks for writing. Good question. Of course all the research on anything in Central America leaves you about 3 or 4 different options but the best info we can tell and what we are going with is the following:

Fly thorugh the mainland (San Pedor Sula) as they have a vet available to check your dog out 24/7 compared to Roatan who does not (evidently this is why direct flights to Roatan with your pet are not an option).

As for paperwork we need the typical vet USDA form that is within 10 days of our arrival and says our pooch is healthy, has her shots etc.

As I mentioned there are other stories out there so we are now contacting the Honduran consulate to see if we need to get anything else like a certification from the FDA that the vet is OK or an importation letter from the consulate (both things one other person said they did that might be overkill but need to be checked out).

After that we just fly with the dog and hope she does not get too stressed out and that it is a cool day since we are going to have layover and waiting for vet period in San Pedro.

Wish us luck
