Cold Call

So today I got a nice lead about a lady who had recently purchased a house. I had never met this person but with a little nudging from my buddy I got the directions and decided I would just do the old cold call and knock on her door.

So with my best door to door encyclopedia salesman attitude I went and found the house and knocked at 11am local time. I figured someone must be home since I saw 3 pairs of flip flops strewn about on the porch. So I knocked again.

Then after a minute just before I was going to walk off, I heard a little stirring in the house and so I stayed. A lady answered the door in her pajamas (yes pajamas not lingerie) and I had obviously woken her up at the crack of 11am. Needless to say it was not the bright cheery eyed new home owner I was looking for but a hung over party girl/trust fund baby that was not sure what she was going to do with the property and why do I need a property manger for this duplex and beach cabana on my land exactly.

As I left my card and told her to call if she wanted some help marketing her property I could not help but think to myself. If only I had been better prepared. In Roatan when calling on customers at 11AM maybe I should have a carafe of bloody marys, just in case.

Update for week ending 5/28/06

Well we have had a lot going on this week and I will try to recap it for you in chronological order.

Sunday - Our friend Gene left Sunday AM. Gene is our partner in the development business and is going to be the partner in the property management business as soon as he moves down at the end of June. We were sorry to see Gene go and look forward to his return.

Daniel my neighbor in the West Bay Mall opened up her deli. I of course came and supported my neighbor. She has a great little deli with some imported groceries and the place was packed.

After that Cindy and I took a nap, read, made dinner and watched the sopranos (what can I say not every minute is something different).

Monday - The new office opened up and we started normal business hours (9-5 M-F, 8-12 on Sat, closed Sundays). For most of the first days we tried to get the phone/DSL lines guys to come back out because we could only use 1 line at once and had some typical problems (they showed up on Wed). The day was good other than that with a few leads on properties to manage. We have an appt with the owners of cinnamon beach house for June 24th for example.

On the home front Monday our Gardner Santos did not come to work. He had said he was sick last Thursday and wanted to go home early. He did not show up Friday but came back on Saturday. Santos does not have a phone and I do not know where he lives so we just waited and wondered as the garden grew and our trash piled up in the basura.

Tuesday - still having trouble with the phones, so we continue to call. We have some construction going on at our house so Cindy has to stay home and watch the workers that are making a new walk in closet, redoing the bathroom and shower and knocking a hole in the wall between two bedrooms making one big bedroom. She fancies herself the general Contractor (GC) but I am pretty sure Melvin the GC we hired has it under control.

Santos did not show up again today so we figure he is quitting or died, but we hope he comes back since when he was working he was really good. We asked around but no one knows where he lives. In the evening we had Spanish class and that's progressing pretty well.

Wed. - Santos came back to work yea! It turned out he had Malaria and he had the pills and a doctors note to proof it. So we told him to take it easy and work slowly but he said he felt much better and worked hard. Never the less we got a lawyer and started the process of formalizing our contract with Santos so there would be no problems later regarding his pay, pensiones and if we had to let him go everything would be documented. The contract is also good for Santos since it gives him proof of our agreement if we try to screw him.

The phone and DSL guys came back and they figured out the problem with our phone lines was they needed static IP addresses and so now everything works (most of the time). If anyone wants to know the Honduran national anthem it is the busy signal. Not because everyone is on the phone but because the phone companies, cell phone companies and DSL phone lines all have major problems connecting to each other so when they do not connect they ring busy. Solution, dial more times eventually it works.

Thursday - I met with the electrician at our Orchid Hill development. Orchid hill is 4.4 acres on top of a beautiful hill overlooking Dixon cove. Latitude Sixteen (our development company with our two other partners Gene and Steve) has a contact on this property due to close June 15th. Well the house on the site is about 60% done so we have been getting quotes to do the plumbing, electrical and finish work inside the house. Thursday I had my 2nd meeting with the electrical guy were going to use to discuss placement of switches etc..

When I got back to my office I told Steve Woods (our local islander that's helping run the office etc.) Go over to the other office they need you to run some errands. So he left at 3, but decided to go home instead of the other office. I asked him the next day what happened and he said he must have gotten confused on things. Steve is funny, one minute he is sophisticated and well spoken but when its convenient for him he is very native and easily confused. I told him I don't think so and explained to him the concept of Country dumb when it suits you. He fessed up and hopefully things will be smoother going forward.

We got our international phone number 970-300-4078 so you guys can call our office now and it is like making a call to Colorado. Thank heaven for VOIP phones.

At home Cindy and the construction guys are knocking this project out at break neck speed so things are going smoothly there thanks to the GCC (General contractor Cindy).

Friday - We sold one of our lots in West Bay and so Cindy and I went to the closing and met the new owner of lot 15. Nice guy who is investing with his IRA with real estate. Evidently you can do that and I found out about his IRA trust manager and how it works. I am intrigued about this so I am planning on investigating it.

In the afternoon I met with Dean and Calvin our web guys who are finishing up the web site. It will be done next week and you can all take a peek at it.

Then as we have done for the last 3 Friday nights we went to West end for dinner at Ricks at 8pm. Mark Havey from the AKR office plays bass in a band that does a lot of island music, Spanish music and some Brazilian jobin stuff. We enjoy listening to the tunes, having a few cervezas and talking with everyone.

This Friday was especially funny as this lady in a pink flower skirt and a white halter style top was dancing to the fast beats of the congos and bongos. Needless to say the music had her shaking pretty hard and out of the top came one of our twins. Not only did she not notice/care she danced for another 2 or 3 minutes and then walked back to her table before someone told her what was out and about. It was pretty funny but she was undaunted stoop up and took a bow.

Cattle Crossing


Hola parnters from Roatan. Notice the mix of espanol and rancher lingo in my first sentence. Well there is a reason. As you can see from this picture in Roatan there is more to be aware of on the roads than just cruise ship folks on Scooters, Taxi drivers that stop in the middle of the road, or construction trucks loaded with workers hurring around.

We also have a few bovine friends out and about. The picture is of a Roatan traffic jam I experienced a week ago coming back from Palmetto Bay. Needless to say the cows have the right of way. There was no rancher around and I guess the whole heard just decided to move it on down the road.

I have also seen a cow right in front of our house on numerous occasions. Jazz starts barking the cow begins mooing and only the fence sepersates them. This cow cruises by 3 or 4 nights a week. Goes by our house and moves into the greener pasture down the road to eat before making her way back up to her normal pasture.

So why all of this cow talk. I don't make the news I just report it. On a similar subject Bob at the Blue Parrot has a filet mignon wrapped in bacon, your choise of potato and a real nice salad with crumbled up egg and bacon for $12. Add the coldest beer on the island at $1.25 each and its pretty reasonable. Cindy (mrs. market price) prefers the surf and turf for $14.

New Office means new Lunch Opportunities


As I sat in my new office today I noticed it was nearing lunch time. So when the internet guys from Tropico finished up I said to my amigo Gene DeMarco down visiting lets get some lunch I am starved.

Typically island the first place I went to which is right down the street, the Starfish Coffee shop was not serving food or coffee today. Bella was getting ready for an art show she said and said come back Sunday and check out my art.

So I went back to my office and thought lets go toward the beach. I ate dinner one time at Cabana Roatana which is about 200 yards directly behind my office. I figured lets see if they are serving lunch today.

Good news... They were. I ordered up the daily special, Chicken, rice, beans and tostones for 120 limps ($6 these are beach prices mind you). Gene got a fajita and we knocked back a couple of Fantas. So for $20 with tip we got a great view of the ocean, sat at a plastic table in the sand and then when we were done made the long 200 yard walk back from the beach to my new office where I am writing this now.

And people say why are you moving there? And I can now say do you walk to the beach for lunch from your office?

Our office is now communicado

Thats right on May 18th at about 1pm local time I got internet and phone connections at the West Bay office of Roatan Life Real Estate and Vacation Rentals. In fact I am updating this blog from my new desk. Hoora I am excited.

The speed is pretty good and the phones sound clear so I am pleased so far.

This last week I go to speak at an International living conference. One of the other speakers I go tot meet was Penny who owns and runs Penelopes isalnd emporium. I really like here take and thought you would enjoy it too.

BEFORE I TELL YOU OF MY BUSINESS ENDEAVORS, I WOULD LIKE TO FIRST TALK ABOUT WHY YOU ARE NOT HERE TOO LATE. WHY THERE ARE EXCELLENT REASONS TO BUY PROPERTY ON ROATAN NOW.

THIS MORNING, AS I WAS ENJOYING MY CUP OF EXCELLENT HONDURAN COFFEE, I STEPPED OUT ONTO OUR LITTLE BEDROOM BALCONY & WONDERED WHAT YOU ALL WOULD BE LIKE & WHAT YOU WILL THINK OF ROATAN. ROATAN IS IN A STATE OF CHANGE. ON ONE SIDE OF OUR HOUSE I WATCHED A YOUNG MAN USING A MACHETE TO CUT BACK THE BUSH, JUST AS IT HAS BEEN DONE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. I TURNED & LOOKED TO THE OTHER SIDE AS ANOTHER MAN WAS FIRING UP HIS GAS WEED EATER.
CHANGE.

HOW I FOUND ROATAN

I HAD BEEN AN INTERNATIONAL LIVING SUBSCRIBER FOR SEVERAL YEARS IN THE LATE 1990’S & KEPT READING ABOUT THIS FACINATING LITLE PLACE CALLED ROATAN. I MET MY PARTNER, TONY ABOUT THE SAME TIME & WE DECIDED TO GO ON THE IL REAL ESTATE ADVENTURE TO THE BAY ISLANDS IN APRIL OF 2000. SITTING ON THE PLANE NEXT TO US WERE SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT PROPERTY ON THE END OF THAT TOUR.

TONY & I WERE VERY EXCITED. OUR DREAM WAS TO LEAVE OUR DEAD END CAREERS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, BUY PROPERTY IN THE ISLANDS & BUILD OUR DREAM HOUSE IN RURAL COLORADO. WE PLANNED TO WINTER ON A TROPICAL BEACH & OPEN A CUTE SHOP WHILE ENJOYING THE COLORADO SUMMERS.

JUST A NOTE HERE, WE WERE NOT THE ONLY ONES WITH THIS DREAM. THE WAY COLORADANS ARE MOVING HERE, THE STATE SHOULD BE PRETTY CLOSE TO EMPTY BY NOW. I COULDN’T FIGURE THIS OUT UNTIL I REALIZED THE LARGEST SCUBA DIVING CLUB IN THE STATES IS LOCATED IN COLORADO.

SO, OFF WE WENT. THE IL TOUR AT THE TIME WAS A DEAD RUN COVERING ROATAN, UTILA & GUANAHA IN A WEEK’S TIME. BE GLAD YOUR SEMINAR IS NOW MUCH IMPROVED.

WE MOVED SO FAST, ONE MEMBER OF OUR IL TOUR, FINALLY ASKED DURING YET ANOTHER BUS RIDE, “CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I’VE BEEN & WHAT I SAW?” I OFTEN WONDER WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO “WHAT ISLAND AM I ON RON”.

ANOTHER MEMBER OF OUR GROUP, UNCLE BOB, FROM NEW JERSEY, KEPT PESTERING A NICE LOOKING BLACK MAN TO GET HIM A DRINK. UNCLE BOB MISTOOK THE GOVERNOR OF UTILA TO BE A WAITER. UNCLE BOB IS NOW RETIRED & LIVING THE GOOD LIFE IN PUERTO VALLARTA. THE BAY ISLANDS ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE.

BECAUSE OF THE FURIOUS PACE, WE HAD ALLOWED OURSELVES ANOTHER WEEK ON OUR OWN TO CLINCH WHATEVER DEAL WE COULD FIND AFTER ALL THE SMOKE & DUST CLEARED.

IN 2000 THERE WAS NO MLS: MULTIPLE LISTING SERVICE HERE. I CONTACTED REALTORS LISTED IN THE IL LITERATURE BEFORE THE TOUR & ATTEMPTED TO SET UP APPTS WITH THOSE WHO ACTUALLY EMAILED ME BACK, WAY BACK THEN. WE HAD 4 DIFFERENT REALTORS READY TO MEET WITH US AFTER THE INITIAL MEETING, JUST LIKE TODAY. I HAD SPECIFICALLY TOLD THEM EXACTLY WHAT OUR PLANS WERE, PRECISELY WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR AND WHAT WE WERE PREPARED TO SPEND.

OUR ORIGINAL DREAM WAS TO OPEN A MINI STORAGE FACILITY. WE NEEDED 2 ACRES ON THE MAIN ROAD; A COMMERCIAL LOCATION BETWEEN THE SHIP DOCKS & THE AIRPORT.

OUR 4 REALTORS KNEW THAT WAS THE ONLY THING WE WANTED TO SEE.
ALL 4 REALTORS TOOK US TO A BROKEN DOWN DISCOTEQUE FOR SALE…………AND THEN, THEY EACH GAVE US A DIFFERENT PRICE!!
WE WERE UPSET TO SAY THE LEAST.

MUCH TO OUR SURPRISE WE FELL IN LOVE WITH UTILA & ENDED UP WRITING A SALES CONTRACT ON A PRISTINE BEACHFRONT LOT. WE ALSO MADE AN OFFER ON A HOUSE IN WEST BAY BEACH, NOT FAR FROM HERE..

EVEN THOUGH WE DIDN’T FIND THAT COMMERCIAL PROPERTY, WE FELT GOOD THAT WE HAD A PIECE OF BEACH ON UTILA & A HOUSE ON WEST BAY BEACH.

BACK AT FANTASY ISLAND, TONY JUST HAPPENED TO GET TELEVISION RECEPTION & FOUND ME.

REMEMBER THE CRASHING 2000 STOCK MARKET??

BACK IN 2000, INTERNET & TELEPHONE WERE IFFY AT BEST. BY THE TIME I GOT THRU ON A PHONE LINE TO THE STATES, MY NEWLY HIRED PORTFOLIO MANAGERS TOLD ME NOT TO WORRY, IT WOULD BE SHORTLIVED & ACTUALLY I SHOULD START BUYING MORE TECH STOCKS AS THE PRICES GOT CHEAPER EVERYDAY.

. WE SPENT THE SECOND WEEK ON THE ISLAND, STAYING AT PALMETTO BAY & NEVER ACCOMPLISHED OUR GOAL.

WE SAID GOOD-BY & HEADED BACK TO FLORIDA. ONCE MY ISLAND FEVER SUBSIDED TO A DULL ACHE I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT I WAS A SINGLE WOMAN INVESTING IN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE & I DIDN’T HAVE A CLUE WHAT I WAS DOING. I WAS ABLE TO BACK OUT OF BOTH CONTRACTS. I THEN PROCEEDED TO LOSE EVERYTHING IN THE TECH MARKET FALL-OUT.

THE $40,000 UTILA BEACHFRONT LOT JUST RECENTLY RESOLD FOR $99,000. THE $135,000 WEST BAY BEACH HOUSE IS NOW WORTH $500,000. IF I HADN’T PANICKED & LISTENED TO STOCKBROKERS WE WOULD HAVE LOST NOTHING. WE WOULD HAVE PROFITED.

AS A SIDE NOTE, OUT OF THE 4 REALTORS WE VENTURED OUT WITH BACK THEN, ONE WAS EXTRADITED & MAY STILL BE IN PRISON, ANOTHER COUPLE FLED IN THE DEAD OF NITE, NEVER TO BE HEARD FROM AGAIN….SOMETHING ABOUT UNCLEAR TITLES & DEATH THREATS. THE OTHER ONE IS INEXPLICABLY, SOMEHOW STILL HERE, PROBABLY LURKING BEHIND A PALM TREE OUT THERE.

SO, BE THANKFUL THAT TODAY YOU HAVE THE MLS, REPUTABLE REALTORS, & AS YOU CAN SEE, MORE THAN ENOUGH TO GO AROUND!
TODAY, THERE IS SO MUCH MORE INFRASTRUCTURE AND MANY MORE DEVELOPMENTS & AREAS TO CHOOSE FROM THAN IN YEARS PAST. YOU ARE DEFINITELY NOT TOO LATE TO INVEST IN ROATAN. BASED ON WHAT HAPPENED TO ME, I SUGGEST YOU BUY “SOMETHING.”

SO, AFTER THE FIRST ROUND, LEAVING ROATAN DEFEATED, WE STARTED ON THE SECOND PART OF OUR PLANS……..BUILD A HOME IN SOUTHERN COLORADO & OPEN UP A WESTERN JEWELRY & COWBOY & INDIAN COLLECTIBLE SHOP….PENELOPE’S WESTERN EMPORIUM.

WE SOON FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS NO WATER ON MY 90 MOUNTAIN ACRES, SO THE ONLY THING WE COULD BUILD WOULD BE A MOUNTAIN TOP PARKING LOT FOR BLACK BEARS. THANKS TO THE US ECONOMY, A 5 YEAR DROUGHT & WILDFIRES, PENELOPE’S WESTERN EMPORIUM LOST MONEY FOR 4 ½ STRAIGHT YEARS.

ONE DAY, FIDDLING WITH MY BRAND NEW CELL PHONE, TONY CAME TO ME & SAID:
“MAY I HAVE A MOMENT OF YOUR TIME?”

WHEN I HEAR THOSE WORDS, I BRACE MYSELF FOR THE WORST.

“PENNY. YOU HAVE CONVINCED ME TO LEAVE SOUTH FLORIDA & RUN AWAY WITH YOU TO BE COWBOYS. FROM THIS EXPERIENCE I NOW KNOW ABOUT BONE CHILLING COLD, SNOW SHOVELING, MOUNTAIN BLACK ICE DRIVING , STATIC ELECTRICITY & LONG UNDERWEAR.

LET’S FACE IT, OUR RELATIONSHIP WAS NOT THE GREATEST.

IF WE ARE GOING TO BE BROKE COULDN’T WE AT LEAST BE POOR IN ROATAN??

WELL, AS IT HAPPENED, A FEW NIGHTS BEFORE, MY VAN BROKE DOWN ON A DESOLATE ICY MOUNTAIN ROAD AT NIGHT. I HAD NO PHONE, NO FLARES, NO BLANKETS, NOTHING. IT WAS WELL BELOW ZERO IN MOUNTAIN LION COUNTRY. THE STATE PATROL FINALLY FOUND ME 2 ½ HOURS LATER WHEN I WAS HONESTLY EXPERIENCING HYPOTHERMIA, THE BEGINNING STAGES OF FREEZING TO DEATH.

THE ONLY THING I COULD SAY TO TONY WAS, “DO YA THINK MY NEW CELL PHONE WILL WORK ON ROATAN?”

IT SOUNDED PRETTY GOOD TO ME.

WE VISITED ROATAN 3 TIMES BEFORE WE MOVED HERE. NOW THAT WE HAD MADE THE LIFE CHANGING DECISION TO LIQUIDATE OUR BUSINESS & LIVES IN THE US, WE HAD LOTS OF RESEARCHING TO DO.

TONY DESCRIBES MY FACT FINDING MISSIONS MUCH LIKE HANGING ONTO A VACCUUM CLEANER ON AMPHETAMINES. WE STAYED IN DIFFERENT AREAS AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF YEAR. WE GROCERY SHOPPED, TRIED COOKING ALL THE DELICIOUS LOCAL FOOD,
VISITED THE CLINICS, FARMACIAS,THE INSURANCE COMPANY, THE FERRETERIAS (HARDWARE STORES), FOUND THE AUTO MECHANIC. WE TOOK THE FERRY TO THE MAINLAND & WINDOW SHOPPED FOR APPLIANCES, ELECTRONICS, HOUSEHOLD GOODS, TO GET A GOOD FEEL FOR WHAT WAS AVAILABLE & WHAT WE NEEDED TO MOVE DOWN WITH US.

BESIDES THAT,SOME THINGS, EVEN LITTLE THINGS ARE A BIG DEAL TO LADIES.

I WAS IN A REAL QUANDRY AS TO WHAT TO DO ABOUT MY NATURALLY BLEACHED BLONDE HAIR. I SOON TIRED OF CHASING TERRIFIED BLONDE WOMEN THROUGH THE STREETS OF COXEN HOLE FOR HELP. WE SAW AN OLD POSTER PROCLAIMING “YELLOW HAIR.”WELL, I DISCOVERED WE HAVE A LOCAL HAIRDRESSER, FRANCISCO, IN THE BARRIO WHO DOES COLOR . I TOOK THE PLUNGE & WAS THE ONLY GRINGA IN THE PLACE. THE HAIR COLOR CHART DISPLAYED BLACK, BROWN, BLUE & BURGUNDY. FRANCISCO CALMED ME DOWN. “NO PROBLEMO, PAY-NAY-LOW-PAY.”(PENELOPE) OUT CAME THE OLD RUSTED CAN OF “BLONDO”. I WASN’T WORRIED BECAUSE IT WAS “DUST FREE.” I CLOSED MY EYES. THERE WAS NO HOT RUNNING WATER, BUT A VERY COOL RAINWATER FOR RINSING. THE WATER TANK ON THE ROOF IS WARMED BY THE SUN.
IT WAS THE BEST HAIR COLOR & CUT OF MY LIFE. HE CHARGED ME $53.00, THE GRINGO RATE, BUT I WAS THRILLED & RELIEVED TO PAY.

FRANCISCO HAS SINCE BEEN DISCOVERED BY BOTH MEN & WOMEN EXPATS. HIS SALON IS TOTALLY REDONE, THERE ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE MAGAZINES TO READ IN THE SITTING AREA & HE EVEN RUNS RADIO COMMERCIALS ON THE ENGLISH SPEAKING RADIO STATION.
WE ALSO HAVE A EUROPEAN HAIR DESIGNER FROM LONDON, LOCATED IN WEST END.
CHANGE.


WE RETURNED TO ROATAN ONE MORE TIME IN 2004, BEFORE THE FINAL MOVE IN 2005, BUYING A LITTLE FIXER-UPPER ON THE SOUTHSIDE IRONSHORE OFF OF WEST BAY ROAD.

THEN WE FOUND OUT THE WHOLE HOUSE WAS NOT GROUNDED. WE BOUGHT 2 REALLY GREAT AIR CONDITIONERS AT A WONDERFUL STORE, DIUNSA, ON THE MAINLAND, IN SAN PEDRO SULA. AFTER WE INSTALLED THEM, WE THEN NOTICED, WHILE PAINTING, WE COULD SEE DAYLIGHT THROUGH THE WALLS & THERE IS A BIG SPACE BETWEEN THE TOP OF THE WALLS & THE LEAKY ROOF.

YOU CAN’T FLUSH THE TOILET OR TAKE A SHOWER. THE REFRIGERATOR CONTENTS BEGIN TO SPOIL & THE FREEZER IS LEAKING WATER ALL OVER THE FLOOR . YOU CAN’T GO OUTSIDE BECAUSE OF THE GAIL FORCE WINDS & COCONUT PROJECTILES.

I SHOULDN’T HAVE EXPERIENCED ALL THIS BECAUSE WE BROUGHT OUR $5000 GENERATOR WITH US. IT WAS SITTING RIGHT THERE DURING ALL THE TROPICAL STORMS ON IT’S CUTE LITTLE CONCRETE PAD DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. YOU SEE THE FLORIDA COMPANY FAILED TO SEND THE $500 WIRE HARNESS INCLUDED WITH THE ORDER, JUST NEVER PUT IT ON THE PALLET FOR SHIPMENT. WE HAD OUR GENERATOR RUNNING, HUMMING ALONG FOR 3 WEEKS & FELT SO SMUG WHEN OUR SIDE OF THE ISLAND PLUNGED INTO DARKNESS & WE WERE LIT UP LIKE A XMAS TREE.
DURING THE LAST SERIES OF OUTAGES, WHEN RECO, THE ELECTRIC COMPANY CAME BACK ON, THE POWER SURGED, BROWNED OUT & FRIED THE GENERATOR TRANSFER SWITCH.
AFTER WEEKS OF WAITING, WE NOW HAVE THE REPLACEMENT $575 TRANSFER SWITCH, PLUS SHIPPING & DUTY & MUST ARRANGE TO BRING THE BOYS BACK OVER FROM LA CEIBA. THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN.

Picking Cashews


I learned a little something this weekend. Cashews come from the bottom of fruits on trees. I kinda new they came from trees but I had no idea that there was a little apple looking thing (really looks more like a pepper) that has the nut haning off the bottom.

It turns out you can eat the fruit (they are yellow or red). They are really sweet and my island friends say that some people put them in jars outside with water and sit them in the sun to make wine.

Cindy and I picked a bunch with Tyrone McField this Sunday. We got a bag of nuts and a bunch of the fruits (fruits are not good after they hit the ground per Tyronne).

Then the nuts are dried and roasted. After the roasting they are cracked and then you have the cashews nice and fresh. Pretty cool process and a lot of fun.

I am continually impressed with the knowledge my local friends have for the native flora and fauna here in Roatan. It is really interesting and fun.

Daylight Savings Time Honduran Style

Most of the people reading this blog have heard of and probably experienced Ben Franklins daylight savings time. It is designed to make longer days so people can be more productive. This is especially useful in higher latitudes.

In Honduras traditionally they have not partaked in Day Light savings time but this week on Tuesday May 3rd President Zelaya and his ministers decided lets do it too. On Friday May 5th this declaration will be official and on Sunday May 7th it will go into effect at midnight. A whopping 5 days notice for every person and business in Honduras.

My experience is most people in Honduras need more than a weeks notice to get the word on a change like this. I am already anticipating interesting comings and goings of my Gardner and Watchmen.

Master Marketing


Take a look at this picture. What do you see? its busy sure, something is going on but what. If you did not know you would have a hard time finding out from the outside. No where on any side of this building is there any signage.

No big deal you might say, but if you knew this was the biggest, most popular and best stocked grocery store on an island of over 35,000 people you might be a little surprised.

This is Eldons and if you want pretty much one stop shopping this is where you go. They have pretty much all the basic house hold groceries and cleaning supplies you would want as well as a small drug store area with beauty products. We go here once a week (the best days are Mondays or Tuesdays after the boat that arrives on Friday has had time to unload and the shelves get restocked).

I love the forward thinking branding that this master marketer has done. If you show no name everyone must know yours. That's elitist shopping at its best. Whole Foods be dammed. If you really are in the know Eldons is where you go.
